Three Oaks Path

The Three Oaks Path, funded by the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) as a Safe Route to School, is a 0.33-mile (1700 linear feet) paved shared use path. As an independent greenway not associated with a road, it provides a car-free link between Three Oaks Elementary School and the Three Oaks, Sherwood Lakes, and Highgate Greens neighborhoods, as well as the Red Mill Shopping District and surrounding areas. The path is located within the future Three Oaks Park off Princess Anne Road, which was purchased in part through the City’s Open Space program. The 10-foot wide accessible path offers a convenient route for walking, biking, and rolling, making it safer and easier to get to school, home, parks and other destinations. It is also a key connection in the City’s network of active transportation facilities.

Background

The Three Oaks Path was a proposed Safe Route to School project in the City Council-adopted Active Transportation Plan (formerly Bikeways & Trails Plan). In 2017 City Council approved an application for TAP grant funding for the path, which was awarded by the State in 2018. The application noted high usage of the prior unimproved and inadequate paths to the school through the future Three Oaks Park property. After delays due to COVID and other factors, construction began in the fall of 2024. The path was dedicated and officially opened to the public on June 2, 2025.
